Super Ads XL [Review]

Almost everyone loves Super Bowl ads, whether it’s a witty Pepsi commercial or GoDaddy’s questionable shower scene. Aclass Apps delivers all of your favorite commercials and more to your local Enyo-supported device.

Similar to it’s smaller, phone version, when you first open up the app, it displays each Super Bowl game in a list on the left side from XLIII to XLVI. Once you select a Bowl, a list of advertisements appears. You select one and a popup appears with a YouTube version of the ad. Once finished, you can close out and select another. It’s simple to the first degree, and it should be.

To set favorites, just click(or tap) the big star next to the ad you like. It is saved in a list of favorites. One thing I did not like is that the “Favorites” list item on the left is inside the Bowl selection. I think it would make more sense to have the Favorites button where the Support button currently is, and have Support be in the App Menu(for non-Touchpad devices, there could be a button to bring down the App Menu, which is currently empty).

In terms of functionality, the app works great. The user interface is simple. I like the logos and the scores for the specific years bowl. However, the text for the teams name is a little hard to read. Upsizing it about 2px per font would do the trick.

The developer has promised the following:
1. Sharing will be in the first update.
2. New ads added as we find them automagically.
3. Have plans to add a Villo chat room.
4. Expect to see it on other platforms soon.

We at WebOS World are especially excited to see our own Villo services being used in any app.

Overall, the app is great, and with future updates already in the works, I can see a lot of people downloading to watch their favorite ads all in one place.

How to seriously improve your webOS legacy device [2.x+]

So we all know that although you can doctor your legacy device(Pre-, Pre+) to webOS 2.1/2.2.4, it does not run that great…at all. There may be a few exceptions based on deviations in devices handling of certain kernels(SR71 at 1.2GHz can only be run by a few phones).

With the release of a few select patches, your device can be turned around once again! I actually switched to an HTC Arrive last summer because my Pre-’s software became unbearable and I did not want to switch back to 1.4.5. The hardware was also on it’s last ends but that’s another story.

Point is, I turned on my Pre- recently, ran Emergency Patch Recovery(EPR), uninstalled Uberkernel and re-patched my system. Here’s the list of things that really turned my phone around.

- We have pushed a backend update (no download required) to all Voogle XL users. This update fixes a few items as listed below.

— Google Voice Number no longer appears as a ” } ” in the preferences

— Infinite initial loading of middle pane now loads in a matter of seconds.

— Login issues should be resolved. No need to change any passwords.

HP wants to Listen and Learn?

With a recent post on the webOS Developer Forums (you can find that post here) we heard that HP wants to Listen and Learn. When I saw this, I was very happy. If you are thinking what I have been thinking over the past week, it has been something along the lines of “What are you thinking HP?! This is not what webOS needs!” and now HP wants to listen to what *we* think. And they will supposedly learn from what we say too. What more could you want?

I think we should all take a part in this, and tell HP how we feel about the recent news, and how we think they can fix it. They say, you don’t get what you don’t ask for.

So, I think we should all tell HP what we think about this past week here.

QuickOffice Editing coming this week?

So, there has been news about Quickoffice document editing coming to the HP TouchPad for some time. Looking at the above screenshot (taken on my HP TouchPad), we see some exciting news! We should see an update to Quickoffice by the “end of the week.”

This update will include Document Editing (probably Word documents), and Spreadsheet editing (presumably Excel). It seems that PowerPoint wont be coming for a little while longer, but hey, you can only ask for so much at a time.

HP modifying Cloud Services security settings, might affect meta-doctored devices.

HP just announced that an upgrade to their Cloud Services security will be hindering the backup of “unofficially supported devices”. They specifically mentioned meta-doctored devices as a culprit. What this means is that users on some meta-doctored devices will not be able to use those services anymore, which mostly includes HP Backup. It was also mentioned that if you sign out of your WebOS Profile, you will not be able to sign back in.

Although it’s the right one, HP is making a bold move here, as a lot of Pre-/Pre+ users have meta-doctored to 2.1 after being left behind this February when it was announced they would not receive the 2.1 update. This is best in hindsight for HP, as they’re moving forward, but they’re leaving a lot of current users behind. With no other options for a WebOS phone besides the Pre 2 and the Veer, they’re forcing some users to another OS.

All is not lost, however, as Rod Whitby is reporting that he is able to sign back in to a WebOS Profile on a Pre- running 2.1. As of right now, no known devices are affected. HP’s announcement mentioned that this mainly affected profiles that were running WebOS 2.1, but were reporting WebOS 1.x. We’ll update when more information is announced. Important update: HP webOS services for devices with unofficially supported webOS versions

Due to recent security enhancements deployed to our Cloud Services, devices reporting invalid Software versions will no longer be able to access HP webOS services, including backup and restore functions.

What users are affected by this update?

If you have used a Homebrew tool (such as meta-doctor) to update your device to webOS 2.x and above (a version not officially supported on your device) in a way that also allows the device to identify itself as having webOS 1.x, the device will no longer be recognized by our Cloud Services as having a valid Software version.

How are users affected by this update?

Devices with invalid Software versions will no longer be able to perform backup and restore while signed into our services, and once signed out of the services will no longer be authorized to sign in.

Customers affected should restore their devices to the approved software version for their webOS device model/carrier combination using webOS Doctor.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have added or created other files on your device, such as music, photos, videos, documents or other files, we recommend that you have another accessible backup of these files before you restore your device, since these files will be deleted from your device during the restore process.

HP is finally rolling out the promised OTA update for the Touchpad, and we’ve got a list of changes that you need not miss. Of course there are always internal things listed as “minor tweaks and bug fixes” but we’ll list the big ones.

Set wallpaper from Photos&Videos app(previously was done in Screen app)

[Rumor] Pre 3 coming August 15th?

We recently posted on Twitter that the Pre 3 would be coming Mid-July. It’s now August 1st and there’s no Pre ~~nor a Touchpad update~~. So what’s actually going on right now at Palm GBU, who knows?

What we have today is another rumor: John_32 on Twitter tweeted that his supplier had “200+ Pre3′s in stock”, but then corrected himself again by posting this tweet. That screenshot looks really promising, but so did the Pre 3 on Palm’s official website. What’s interesting to note is that it says Palm Pre 3, and not HP Pre 3. The last time anything said Palm Pre 3 was Richard Kerris’ EXIF data when he took a picture with his phone. A later picture with a Pre 3 revealed in the EXIF data that it was now HP.

Take it with a grain of salt just like everything else, but the end of Summer is winding down and there still isn’t even an inch of Pre 3 news. Not like it’s coming to Sprint though, right?

HP TouchPad overclocked to 1.5 GHz

It looks like the wait to reach 1.5GHz is over thanks to the fine folks at WebOS Internals.

WebOS Internals has released a new kernel that will overclock the current HP TouchPad to 1.5GHz. To get it, go over to the Preware kernel testing feeds: ~~http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Testing_Feeds.~~ This kernel is now in the Stable feeds!
